One of the many consequences of the global pandemic of 2020 is that vacation trips have been suspended indefinitely. Obviously, that means that there is little point to Airbnb promoting bookings now. Going silent and relinquishing all revenue, however, is not the way for brands to survive, so it is necessary to adapt to fit the new reality.
That’s why Airbnb just introduced Online Experiences. These are video interactions with hosts from around the world that people pay for, at rates that appear to range from $5 to $51 an hour per person. Airbnb describes it as follows:
Try something new together
They aren’t necessarily rooted in specific geography, as some of the experiences are magic tricks, cooking, yoga, and even astrology (the $51 an hour option).
While Airbnb is marketing the experiences to potential customers, it’s also marketing its venue as a way for hosts to make money. They have to submit their idea for review. First Airbnb clarifies what its expectations are for an experience:
- It’s led by a knowledgeable and passionate host
- Guests participate hands-on, or are immersed in an activity
- It gives guests access to a special place or community
- It tells the story of a host’s unique perspective
It also stipulates that it will not consider something that does not have an identifiable host or that “guests could easily find on their own.” That would mean that the cooking and meditations techniques offered on this platform, for pay, have to be distinct from the free ones available.
Enjoy your virtual trip! Safe virtual travels!
