Sharing Content Created by Customers

This retail tool company has customers sharing pictures and videos of the projects they are working on with the hashtag #HarborFreightProjects

Harbor Freight is a D2C company for tools. It normally reaches out to customers via email. Now it’s taken things up a notch to drive more engagement.

It invited customers to share pictures and videos of the projects they are working on with the hashtag #HarborFreightProjects.

It didn’t offer any incentive beyond the bit of fame of having those projects shared “with millions of people in the Harbor Freight community.” Apparently, that was enough inducement, at least for the early entries.

They include projects like the retro-cool Volkswagen bars featured on Mike Alessi’s Instagram, as well as various practical solutions improved by fitting together wood pieces, like “Chicago Electric 12in Folding Miter Saw Stand” by Sam Mitchell.

For truck enthusiasts there’s the Garage Bilt’s video entitled Removing and Installing a Cummins in UNDER 4 MINUTES!?!, (yes it is a time lapse and not real time) which has close to 90K views now.

“Stay Safe. Stay Busy. Have Fun!”

That’s how Harbor Freight describes its aim in expanding the reach of customer projects to inspire others.

Should you be interested in submitting your own project, these are the rules:

Please make sure your videos are no longer than 5 minutes and that you don’t include:

  • Obscenities or discriminatory or other offensive language or images
  • Links or solicitations for other businesses
  • Personal information such as phone numbers or email addresses
  • Uses of a product for something other than uses described in the product manual

Good luck!
