What’s in this article:
- Netflix just launched a new feature, Fast Laughs – perhaps a “TikTok clone” as The Verge puts it
- Fast Laughs inspires customers to watch more shows or revisit their favorite ones, and then share them on social media
Netflix just launched a new feature for iOS called Fast Laughs. The feature plays a reel that strings together clips from films, sitcoms, and stand-up comedians.
It’s meant to pique the interest of subscribers in new shows and to motivate them to re-watch what they’ve already seen and enjoyed. They can do it right away: “Fast Laughs lets you add series, films, and stand-up specials to your list, or start viewing them immediately.”
But it’s not just about increasing engagement among subscribers but about getting their friends interested, as well through social sharing. Individual clips can be shared on WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter.
Just be careful about who is on the receiving end of the share. Netflix does add the warning “that not all clips will be appropriate for all audiences,” and that holds true even for its video announcement, which would not get a G rating.
The Verge’s take on this new feature is that it serves as Netflix’s answer to TikTok. While the two platforms deliver distinct forms of content, when there is only so much time in the day, screen time devoted to TikTok means less time for Netflix.
The article also acknowledged that it’s not just about viewing Fast Laughs instead of TikTok videos but about using them to inspire them to watch more shows or revisit their favorites on Netflix.
