To promote its pet-friendly hotels, Baymont by Wyndham just announced “a nationwide search for its first-ever Baymont Buddy of the Year.” The dog selected as the brand ambassador will star in the hotel chain’s digital marketing campaign, and “its fur-parents” will be rewarded with a weekend getaway plus $2,500.

So, what does it take to be the representative of this dog-friendly hotel? Baymond describes the winning canine as follows: “Our ideal star will be playful but well-trained, great with strangers, and a ham in front of the camera.”

Those who want to enter (and really, what kind of dog owner doesn’t think that their very own pooch is perfection on paws?) will have to do more than snap a great picture. Like many job applications, this contest requires a write up of why you should get the position, and the humans will have to do that for the dog.

If you’re up for it and qualify as a US resident over the age of 21, you can send up to five photos of the dog along with up to 250 words of text that describes why your pup should become the Baymont Buddy of the Year to baymontbuddy@citizenrelations.com.

Customer marketing challenges and opportunities

Submissions must be in by 11:59 p.m. ET on May 4, 2021. But the hotel brand doesn’t say how soon after that the winner will be announced. All it promises is that the winner will be declared “later this year.”

Regardless of when the canine will win the coveted crown, it actually makes a lot of sense to plan such a campaign now. As we saw in Scent for the Jet Set Pet, spurred by feelings of isolation when staying home for work, school, and everything else during the pandemic, pet demand has surged. When these pet parents travel, they would appreciate accommodations that also welcome their dogs.
