COVID-19 Ads as Time Capsules

Here's a roundup of a few TV spots that are adapting to coronavirus times. It's a chance to be relevant and evergreen both at the same time

Every now and then, when you stumble upon an old TV commercial, it feels like you’ve entered a time capsule. It’s always funny to see how things had changed since the 1990s, for instance, when commercials that seemed so well done look so outdated now.

But sometimes – this exact nostalgia reminds us of how and when things all began.

Fast forward to 2020, we’re sure many COVID-19 related TV spots will become such time capsules, that will take us back to this health crisis and give us all that same feeling we are experiencing right now.

But, they can also present an opportunity for an advertiser to be ahead of the curve, and combine relevancy with evergreen qualities.

So, let’s try and predict what we see in ads these days, that will become a new norm once the world goes back to… well, a new kind of normal?

Let’s start with this one from Visa. The message? Sanitize your hands like an Olympian. Simple, right – Visa, an Olympics sponsor, is telling us to sanitize our hands like Olympians. We think that this is one habit that will stay with us in the future. If you’re in favor, raise your (clean) hand!

Second, is the Frontier Communications TV commercial. It talks about being homeschooled during lockdown. And, as learning from home, just like working from home – becomes a more common thing than it was just a couple of months ago – we think that it will also stick around in the future. And when someone stumbles on this ad in the future, perhaps it won’t seem outdated at all!

Oh, and here’s a scary thought: are “sick days” of kids staying home, playing video games, and eating grilled cheese sandwiches a thing of the past?

The third one comes from Jared’s Love Can’t-Wait Virtual Wedding commercial. And just like it sounds, its promoting couples that are actually getting married online. They are now hosting virtual weddings in their gowns and suits and all. Once people get used to it, will this be the destination wedding killer?

And, the final one we want to focus on now is by BMW – their Adapting Now and Improving the Future of Car Buying commercial.

Buying a car can sometimes be a nightmare, wasting your entire day at dealerships, researching, finding the best deals… but if we all need to keep our distance, maybe there is a better way?

BMW is proving that there is, by providing its customers with the ability to shop online with special financing options, plus at-home pick-up and drop-off services. They are really adapting to our new reality, and there’s no reason this habit won’t stick around.

Brands, think about it when you do your marketing, communications, and advertising these days, maybe being super relevant will help make your messages last longer? It sounds contradictory, right, but it is an exciting trend that is worth paying attention to.
