A Shoo-in for Lego Lovers

Walking the walk of creativity, this Lego x Adidas collab builds confidence through play

What’s in this article:

  • The Lego x Adidas partnership features bold colored running shoes that can be customized with Legos and is meant to “let children experience collaboration and the principles of fair-play, as well as build mental resilience”
  • The collab also justifies spending more than you may ordinarily shell out for a pair of sneakers to gain the educational component

This past October, Lego and Adidas announced its partnership aimed at producing Adidas apparel and shoes that integrate with the Lego brand. There are several limited edition products made from that collaboration that you could now shop for on both the Adidas and Lego site.

The latest product of that partnership that is generating quite a bit of buzz online is the new Adidas Ultraboost DNA X Lego Plates shoes, priced at $200. Based on the enthusiastic reaction to the tweet that Lego put out to announce the shoes’ arrival with a short video showing off its features, it looks like a shoo-in for fans of the Lego brand.

It certainly looks like fun, though I do wonder if parents and their kids will actually use the shoes they wear to build out Lego structures as implied in the picture on the Adidas site. At best, they’d likely just rearrange a few of the flatter bricks to add some color to the shoe because anything taller would get in the way and likely be knocked down while you walk.

Practicality aside (and really practicality plays very little in a lot of people’s shoe decisions as evidenced by high heel styles remaining a thing at all), the shoes will likely be popular as a celebration of walking the walk of creativity.

That was really the underlying value for the collaboration according to the announcement last year. Julia Goldin, Chief Marketing Officer at the LEGO Group highlighted how creativity and sports come together to build confidence through play:

Great play experiences are a fun way to learn and build creative confidence, and so is sport – and that’s why we’re so excited about this partnership. Together, play and sport let children experience collaboration and the principles of fair-play, as well as build mental resilience. These are crucial life-skills that can help children unlock their full potential.

Certainly, these are values that are likely to appeal to all parents, not to mention a way to justify spending more than you may ordinarily shell out for a pair of sneakers to gain the educational component.
