Three Ways Brands Celebrated Earth Day

Earth Day is a chance for companies to reflect on how they affect the climate

In this article:

  • A variety of brands, including Lululemon and SodaStream, celebrated Earth Day by rolling out new campaigns.
  • Increasingly, companies are taking a stand against climate change, and announcing new sustainability efforts.

Another Earth Day has come and gone, and some companies took the opportunity to celebrate our planet.

Since 1970, many countries celebrate Earth Day  every year on April 22nd, as a chance to remind people how important it is to take care of our planet . Taking care of our planet  has become increasingly crucial as global warming’s effects, such as hotter temperatures, higher water levels, and more extreme weather events, transpire. Companies are also coming under fire for how their business operations contribute to global warming.

Here’s how three brands ushered in Earth Day this year:

  1. SodaStream, which sells a carbonated drink maker, launched one of the more notable Earth Day campaigns this year. In an ad featuring Baywatch actor David Hasslehoff, SodaStream promised that for every soda machine it sells in the month of April 2022, it will save one baby turtle. The company hopes to save one million turtles. SodaStream is also working with an NGO called SEE Turtles to clean up single-use plastic in oceans.
  2. In an attempt to combat waste in the fashion industry, athleisure brand Lululemon rolled out its “Like New” program in U.S. stores and online on Earth Day. Lululemon shoppers will be able to bring in used clothing items, and receive a gift card in return. Then, Lululemon, which is partnering with resale business Trove, will sell the used clothes online. The Lululemon Like New program was first introduced last year.
  3. Vegan food maker Just Egg took a more aggressive approach for Earth Day. Just Egg, which makes plant-based egg substitute products, put up billboards in Washington, D.C. One sign read “This egg sandwich is more effective against climate change than Ted Cruz. The campaign also provided viewers with a QR code, which can be used to sign a petition calling for climate change legislation from lawmakers.

Earth Day isn’t just an important marketing day for sustainable brands like Just Egg. Making promises to reduce carbon footprints and fight climate change–and keeping those promises–are becoming the standard for most brands across the globe.
