The toy company is launching a new and improved version of the DeLorean car from the 1985 movie “Back to Future.” Lego will sell the set, which has 1,856 pieces, for $169. The new car is reportedly Lego’s best attempt at recreating the car so far, after releasing an earlier iteration of the car in 2013 with only 401 pieces. This DeLorean features gull-wing doors, a less blocky hood, a windshield piece, and a light-up flux capacitor.
The DeLorean set is part of Lego’s Creator Expert collection of more than 30 of the most challenging Lego builds. The collection includes “iconic vehicles, detailed modular structures, pop culture favorites, and seasonal sets,” according to Lego’s website. Advanced builders can assemble an Adidas shoe, the Titanic, the Colosseum, and more.
Lego has been creating sets based on movies since 1999, when it made a version of the X-Wing Fighter from “Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.” These sets are targeted at adults who enjoy creating with Legos, and also appreciate the nostalgia provoked by these sets from pop culture staples. When Lego created its initial DeLorean from “Back to the Future,” it was the first time the company made a product based on a fan’s design.
This revamped version of the DeLorean was designed by a lead designer from Lego, Sven Franic, and his team of five designers. The group took “four to six months” to create the car, said Franic.
Once assembled, the DeLorean’s dimensions are 13.9 x 6.1 x 4.3 inches. The car can also be put together in three different ways as the car from “Back to the Future,” “Back to the Future Part II,” or “Back to the Future Part III.” The set also comes with a hoverboard, a case of plutonium, and a license plate that reads “OUTATIME.”
Lego has benefited from the pandemic, as more families spend time at home. During 2021, Lego saw its profits increase by a third. With this latest collection, the other Creator Expert sets, Lego is marketing to adults who played with Legos as kids, and now have kids of their own.
