Coca-Cola is rolling out a new design in the United Kingdom.

In an effort to reduce plastic waste, Coke is releasing a new bottle with an attached cap. By early 2024, Coke plans to fully launch the new caps on plastic bottles of Coke, Coke Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, Fanta, Sprite, and Dr Pepper. For now, Coke plans to release the cap in the UK only.

In addition to helping the environment, Coke is hoping to improve its brand image, so that consumers won’t associate it with littered caps. All of Coke’s bottles are made from entirely recyclable plastic. The caps, however, are easy to lose track of and don’t always end up in recycling bins.

In a press release, Coke’s General Manager in Great Britain Jon Woods said that the change is “one of many steps we’re taking towards our global commitment to help collect and recycle a bottle or can for every one that we sell by 2025, on our journey towards a World Without Waste.” The World Without Waste initiative includes plans for Coke to recycle empty Coke bottles or cans for every one that it makes. Coke also intends to make cans and bottles with 50% recyclable material by 2030 and to make the packaging recyclable by 2025.

Coke isn’t the only company that will have to make changes to its bottles. The European Union is mandating that the caps attach to certain plastic bottles by 2024.

Some critics are saying that companies like Coke aren’t doing enough for the environment with the bottle cap change. Coke produces 3 million tons of plastic packaging globally every year, according to Bloomberg. The beverage company has been called the world’s biggest polluter.

But the new caps could be a start to reducing Coke’s plastic waste and prioritizing the planet.
